MPVM’S Creative Appeal : Save Sparrows 2017-------
A day long exhibition was held at Maharshi Patanjali Vidya Mandir on the 18th of May, to bring to awareness the need to save sparrows. The little brown birds which were a known sight in every Indian household have drastically reduced in number and the Summer Exhibition at MPVM has taken up the cause of the conservation of sparrows.
The aim of the exhibition was to generate awareness among the parents and guests about making efforts to save our environment and to awaken among the students love and responsibility towards nature. The exhibition included about 500 bird houses created by the students out of waste materials. After the exhibition, the students would be carrying their self-designed bird houses to install them at a safe place in their individual homes. There, the students would be daily monitoring the activities of the birds. The birds activities would also be captured on the camera for the photography competition to be held when the school reopened after the summer vacation. After a careful monitoring during the one and a half month summer vacation, the students would share their experiences and observation in the class with the teachers. Each student’s photo-collection would be carefully judged, the best 100 entries would be selected and 10 best would be awarded prizes.
Second part of the day’s event was a beautiful dance on the theme of Save Girl-Child. In the context of our Indian culture, nature and mother both have been always worshipped, but both today face utter negligence. The dance performance by the student of class 9 tried to creatively engage the minds of the spectators to appreciate the beauty and importance of the daughter and woman in the family and society.
Prof. Krishna Gupta, the Secretary of MPVM Samiti, appreciated the exhibition and the dance enactment. She pointed out the prevailing social contradiction where on the one hand woman is worshipped as Shakti and yet the gild child is neglected, ridiculed and often aborted before birth. This patriarchal mindset has resulted in the adverse sex ratio and the demographic imbalance in our country. She urged the students to understand that gender issues have been created by men, that the notion of the weaker sex is a myth and in the school’s co-educational environment both boys and girls should be equally respected and given all opportunities to excel. Prof. Krishna Gupta also appreciated the efforts of the school to carry forward the theme of Save Sparrow which had begun in the previous year. The students must unlearn the western notion of using nature as a commodity for human welfare and learn to live in harmony with nature. She wished all the students to become effective social contributors to the society. The Principal of the school Smt. Sushmita Kanungo thanked the guests and the students and expressed her faith in the capability of her teachers as well as the students.
